Section 1.3: Working with Victims

Methods for prosecutors to most effectively work with victims.

A few things a Deputy must keep in mind during any case are as follows:

Be aware of different cultural backgrounds. Do not take anything for granted. What you may believe is trivial or non-offensive may be extremely important or offensive to someone who comes from a different cultural or economic background from you.

  1. Do not talk down to the victims, but explain things in laypersons terms. Stay away from using legal terminology.
  2. Make victims feel as though they are part of the prosecution team. All team members are working for the same thing – a just result for the victim and the defendant.
  3. Remember that talking to victims about their trauma may result in your own vicarious trauma. This is common and does not have to impact you ability to perform your job effectively.

It is important to maintain an awareness of vicarious trauma. Recognizing common trauma responses in yourself can help to prevent some of the more serious consequences of vicarious trauma.

Key Concept: The work that you do will "rub off" on you. It is important to recognize your own stress reactions and identify your support systems.
