 Man charged in hostage situation

Bill Ritter Jr. has filed charges against a man accused of holding a 21-year-old woman at knifepoint in a Denver fast food restaurant last weekend.

Arturo Burmea (DOB 8-6-81) is charged with First-Degree Burglary (F3), Second-Degree Kidnapping (F3), Second-Degree Assault (F4), Menacing (F5), Criminal Mischief (F4), and Failure to leave premises (F4).

The charges allege that on June 12, 2004, Arturo Burmea threw a brick through a window of the Church’s Chicken restaurant on Colorado Blvd. and 34th Ave in Denver. He then entered the restaurant taking a woman hostage at knifepoint.

After lengthy negotiations police were able to disarm the man by using less than lethal force. Both he and the victim were taken to Denver Health Medical Center to be treated for their injuries.

Burmea remains on a police hold at the hospital. A court date has not been set at this time.
