MAN PLEADS GUILTY IN HIT/RUN INVOLVING POLICE OFFICER

A man charged in connection with a hit-and-run crash in front of a Denver elementary school in January has pleaded guilty today and was sentenced to 9 years in prison.

Javier Cruz-Cabellero (DOB:7-25-84) pleaded guilty to two counts of vehicular assault (F4 and (F5), and leaving the scene of an accident (F5).

On January 22, 2004, Cruz-Cabellero was driving drunk when he drove through a school zone at Florida and Vrain Way at a high rate of speed.  He crashed into a Denver police officer who was conducting traffic enforcement.  Cruz-Cabellero then fled the scene and was involved in a subsequent crash a few blocks away before being taken into custody.

Cruz-Cabellero went to immediate sentencing after entering his guilty plea today.  The Denver police officer who was injured in the incident told the court he was grateful that he was the one who was hit rather than one of the school children.  Cruz-Cabellero also spoke, asking for forgiveness.
