MAN CHARGED IN HIT/RUN INVOLVING POLICE OFFICER

Denver District Attorney Bill Ritter, Jr. has charged a man in connection with a hit and run crash in front of a Denver elementary school last week.

Javier Cruz-Cabellero* (DOB:7-25-84) is charged with two counts of vehicular assault (F4 and (F5), leaving the scene of an accident (F5), two counts of DUI (M), reckless driving, failure to obey a traffic device, and no operator’s license.

The charges allege that on January 22, 2004, Cruz-Cabellero was driving drunk when he recklessly drove through a school zone at a high rate of speed and crashed into a Denver police officer who was conducting traffic enforcement.  The driver fled the scene and was involved in a subsequent crash a few blocks away before being taken into custody.

Cruz-Cabellero remains in custody in the Denver County Jail.  His bond has been set at $250,000.  He is scheduled to appear in Denver County Court, room 12T, on Thursday, January 29, 2004 at 9:00 a.m. to be advised of the charges.
