MOM CHARGED WITH ABUSE

Denver District Attorney Bill Ritter, Jr. has charged a mother with felony child abuse today in connection with alleged abuse that preceded the death of her son last month.

Veronica Elias (DOB: 9-26-72) is charged with one count of child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury (F3).

2-year-old Mike Elias died from blunt force trauma on February 14, 2004.  His mother’s boyfriend, Jose Torres (DOB: 4-6-82), was charged on February 19, 2004 with first-degree murder (F1) and child abuse resulting in death (F2).

The charge filed against Elias today alleges that she was aware of injuries and abuse to her toddler son as early as January 2004 but did not seek medical treatment for him and continued to leave him in the care of Torres.

Elias now faces up to 12 years in prison if convicted.  She remains in custody in the Denver County Jail.  Her bond was set at $125,000.  She will appear in Denver County Court, room 12T, for her formal advisement on Friday, March 26, 2004 at 9:00 a.m.
