Denver District Attorney Bill Ritter Jr. has formally charged a former football coach accused of stealing money from his team.

Edward Johnson III (03-19-68) is charged with Theft (F4).

The charges allege that between October 15, 2003 and November 28, 2003 Johnson collected about $7,800 from members of his football team for a tournament in Las Vegas over the 2003 Thanksgiving holiday. When the parents and players arrived in Las Vegas, they discovered registration fees, hotel fees, and transportation fees had not been paid.  Johnson coached a recreational youth football team in Denver..

Parents confronted Johnson in December 2003 and later reported their allegations to the  Denver District Attorney’s Economic Crime Unit.

Bond is set at $10, 000. At this time Johnson remains at large.
