Woman charged with false reporting*

Denver District Attorney Bill Ritter, Jr. has formally charged a woman accused of making a false report in a hit-and-run accident.

Marilyn Shelton (DOB 08-08-68) is charged with attempt to influence a public servant (F4) and false reporting (M3).

The charges allege that Shelton reported a hit and run accident to police on May 19, 2004.  She provided a vehicle description, driver description and license plate number for a vehicle that she claimed hit her car and took off.  Detectives later concluded that no such incident had taken place.

Shelton will appear in Denver County Court, room 12T, on June 17, 2004 at 9:00 a.m. to be formally advised of the charges.

The presumptive range for sentencing on a class 4 felony is up to six years in prison and for a class 3 misdemeanor is up to six months in jail.

*The charges against Marilyn Shelton were dismissed by the District Attorney's Office in January 2005 based on the belief that the charges could not be proven to a jury beyond a reasonable doubt.

*The filing of a criminal charge is merely a formal accusation that an individual(s) committed a crime(s) under Colorado laws.  A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.  See Colo. RPC 3.6
