HIGH SPEED CHASE DRIVER CHARGED

Denver District Attorney Bill Ritter Jr., has formally filed charges against a man accused of assaulting and eluding police officers.

Jamel Ward (DOB: 1-28-74) was charged with two counts of first-degree assault (F3) and one count of eluding (F5).

The charges allege that two Denver police officers observed Ward getting into a stolen vehicle on January 15, 2004.  When ordered to exit the vehicle, Ward allegedly tried to hit one of the officers and then drove onto a sidewalk in an attempt to hit the other officer.  He then led police on a high speed chase, involving both police and news helicopters.  Ward allegedly got out of the vehicle and fled on foot to 8th and Ivanhoe where he was apprehended.

The case has been assigned to the Denver District Attorney's Gang/Gun unit.  Ward remains in jail and is scheduled to appear in Denver County Courtroom 12T on January 22, 2004 at 9:00 am for his second advisement on the charges.
