CARJACKER SENTENCED TO PRISON

Michael Caranza (DOB: 11-7-74) was sentenced to 6 years in prison today for stealing a woman’s car at knifepoint from the Cherry Creek Mall just more than a year ago.

Caranza pleaded guilty earlier to robbery in connection with taking the car of a 64-year-old woman as she was getting into her car on December 8, 2003.  He also pleaded guilty to an escape charge.  He was sentenced to 5 years for the robbery and one year for escape, to be served consecutively.

The court will recommend to the Department of Corrections that consideration be given to placing Caranza in its San Carlos facility, which is located on the campus of the Mental Health Institute in Pueblo.  The facility is designed for special needs offenders.
