RAUL GARCIA-GOMEZ CASE
Denver District
Attorney Mitch Morrissey has issued a statement updating the
Raul Garcia-Gomez case. Garcia-Gomez was taken into custody in
Mexico on June 4, 2005 and remains in custody in Mexico City.
He is being held on
charges that were filed by DA Morrissey in Denver District Court
on May 16, 2005. The filing of these charges enabled Denver law
enforcement officials and others to have the authority to pursue
Garcia-Gomez in Mexico. The case, including the charges,
remains sealed.
District Attorney
Morrissey has been in contact with numerous officials including
representatives of the U.S. Department of Justice in preparation
for pursuing extradition. He
has been advised by the Department of Justice that a grand jury
indictment MAY BE a preferred method to use in attempting
to extradite this particular suspect from Mexico. The Denver
DA's Office is now considering whether or not to present the
case to the Denver Statutory Grand Jury. Additional
discussion will take place with federal officials this week
before a final decision is made.
Morrissey has also
formally charged a man with helping Garcia-Gomez after the
murder of Denver police officer Don Young and attempted murder
of Jack Bishop.
Jaime Arana-Del
Angel (DOB: 05-26-78) is charged with accessory to crime
(F4).
The charge alleges
that Arana-Del Angel “rendered assistance” to Garcia-Gomez
knowing that Garcia-Gomez had committed a crime.
Arana-Del Angel
remains in custody in the Denver County Jail. His bond is set
at $50,000. He is scheduled to appear in Denver County Court,
room 12T, to be formally advised of the charge on Wednesday,
June 8, 2005 at 9 a.m.
