STATEMENT REGARDING EXTRADITION

Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey responded today to the announcement by Mexican officials that the extradition order for Raul Gomez-Garcia has been signed.

Gomez-Garcia is charged with second-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder in a shooting earlier this year that left Denver police officer Donald Young dead and left officer John “Jack” Bishop injured.

“I am extremely pleased that the extradition order has been signed.  The process has moved forward just as we understood it would.  I appreciate the work done on this case by both Mexican and American officials and am fully prepared for the next step in the process.”

Morrissey spoke with the Mexican Consul General this morning confirming that an extradition order for Gomez-Garcia has been signed by Mexico’s Secretary for Foreign Affairs.  The DA’s office has also been in touch with the victims to let them know of the extradition progress.

Morrissey cautions that there is still a possibility the defendant will appeal the extradition order but acknowledges that today’s announcement marks significant progress.
