Brother-in-law charged with attempted murder

Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey has formally charged a man accused of shooting his brother-in-law.

Kelly Phillips Jr. (DOB: 09-27-79) is charged with attempted murder (F2), first-degree assault (F3), and a crime of violence.

On the morning of July 5, 2005 36-year-old Corey Morrison was leaving home when he was shot and injured in front of his apartment complex.  Morrison’s wife was home sleeping at the time and came outside after hearing her husband’s calls for help.  A neighbor then called the police.  The charges allege it was Phillips who shot Morrison; Phillips had been staying with the victim and other family members since arriving in Denver from Texas.

Phillips is in custody at the Denver County Jail.  His bond has been set at $200,000.  He is scheduled to be formally advised of the charges on July 15, 2005 in Denver County Courtroom, 12T.

Phillips remains a suspect in a fatal shooting that occurred three days later.  Formal charges have not yet been filed for that case.
