CHARGES FILED IN “COLD CASE” SEXUAL ASSAULT

Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey has formally charged a man in connection with a 1992 sexual assault that occurred in Denver.

John Allen Ricks (DOB: 07-27-73) is charged with first-degree sexual assault with force (F3).

In July 1992, a 16-year-old girl was walking along the 3900 block of west 10th Avenue when a man grabbed her, dragged her down into a wooded area along a creek and then sexually assaulted her.  The case remained unsolved.

In September 2004, the case was reviewed as part of Denver’s Cold Case DNA Project and evidence was submitted to Denver’s Crime Lab for state-of-the-art DNA testing.  A DNA sample was recovered and identified.  It was entered into a national databank (CODIS) and in April 2005 it was matched to Ricks, who was on parole for robbery.

Ricks was arrested on May 19th, 2005 and remains in custody in the Denver County Jail.  His bond is set at $50,000 and he will be advised of the charge on Thursday, May 26, 2005 at 9 a.m. in Denver County Court, room 12T.

The victim, who is now 29, is living out of state and has been notified of the developments in her case.
