DRUNK DRIVER GETS
MAX FOR KILLING YOUNG WOMAN
A 56-year-old man
received the maximum possible prison sentence today in
connection with a drunk-driving crash that killed a young woman
last summer.
Ramon David
Romero (DOB: 08-31-48) was sentenced to 24 years in prison
for killing 19-year-old Sonja DeVries. Romero was driving
drunk on July 18, 2004 when he slammed into the back of a car
driven by DeVries as she was stopped at a red light at Alameda
Avenue and Holly Street.
Denver District
Court Judge Michael Martinez presided over the sentencing
hearing and told the victim's family and friends that he
received more letters of support and concern for Sonja DeVries
than he had ever received in any other case.
Deputy District
Attorney Adrienne Greene asked the judge to give Romero the
maximum pointing out his seven prior DUI cases. Several
family members and friends also spoke about how devastating
Sonja's death was and what a great loss it is.
Romero spoke on his
own behalf asking for forgiveness. A family member also
spoke on his behalf.
