State grand jury indicts two
dozen in major crime investigation
Denver District
Attorney Bill Ritter today announced the indictment of 24 people
as a result of a joint crime-fighting effort that involved
several local, state and federal agencies over the last year and
a half. The allegations in two separate indictments
include murder, attempted murder, racketeering, distribution of
drugs, tampering and bribing witnesses and other serious crimes.
Ritter was joined by
Denver Police Chief Gerry Whitman, interim Colorado Attorney
General John Suthers, Department of Corrections Executive
Director Joe Ortiz, ATF Resident Agent in Charge Dennis Downs,
head of the Metro Gang Task Force Lt. Jim Welton and Bev Walz
with Rocky Mountain HIDTA in announcing the indictment and
explaining the nature of the allegations.
The investigation
began in February 2003 when Denver police detective Aaron Lopez
started investigating an assault case. His investigation
into this single incident of assault grew into a multi-agency
task force investigation as the scope and violence of the
alleged criminal activity became clear.
The investigation
was headquartered at the Metro Gang Task Force and was led by
the work of Denver police detective Lopez and ATF Special Agent
Jeff Russell. They worked with a crime analyst from the
Rocky Mountain HIDTA (High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area) and
others.
In June 2004 the
investigation was taken to a state grand jury in partnership
with the Colorado Attorney General's Office to utilize the grand
jury's ability to compel testimony and conduct its investigation
in secret. The investigation included a great deal of
dangerous undercover work and hundreds of hours of work on
breaking secret codes contained in letters and phone calls.
The first indictment
was handed down on December 10, 2004 and alleges that 5 members
of the 211 Crew participated in the murder of a DOC inmate,
