MAN WHO KILLED TODDLER GIVEN 48 YEARS IN PRISON

Jose Torres (DOB: 04-06-82) was sentenced to 48 years in prison today for the child abuse death of 2-year-old Mike Elias exactly one year ago.  Torres pleaded guilty in December 2004 to child abuse resulting in death.  He had been caring for Elias and was accused of biting, torturing and then beating the child.  The toddler’s mother, Veronica Elias, has pleaded guilty to felony child abuse for knowing about the injuries and not intervening.  She will be sentenced on March 14, 2005.
