CHARGES FILED IN CAR-JACKING CASE

Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey has formally charged a man accused in a crime spree that included an attempted murder and series of car-jacking attempts early last week.

Joseph Yacteen (DOB: 03-25-79) is charged with attempted first-degree murder – extreme indifference (F2), second-degree assault (F4), aggravated robbery (F3), two counts of attempted aggravated robbery (F4), twelve counts of menacing (F5), and two counts of first-degree criminal trespass (F5).

The charges allege that Yacteen, who was wanted for failing to appear in a Denver court case, fled from RTD transit security officers late Sunday night, August 7, 2005.  The chase allegedly set a crime spree in motion that included an attempted car-jacking in the 1400 block of Stout and Champa Streets, a shooting and attempted car-jacking a few minutes later in the 1400 block of Stout, and a car-jacking nearby in which he forced four men out of a vehicle and fled the scene.  He was taken into custody nearly 24-hours later after barricading himself in a vacant home at 2720 Josephine Street.

Patricia Vail (DOB: 11-15-81) is also being charged with accessory to crime (F4) for allegedly helping Yacteen.  Yacteen, who remains in custody, appears in Denver County Court, room 12T, on Thursday, August 18, 2005 at 9 a.m. to be advised of the charges.  Vail has been released on a $50,000 bond and will be advised on August 26, 2005.
