MAN CHARGED IN HIT/RUN CRASH WITH

WHEELCHAIR-BOUND VICTIM

Denver District Attorney Bill Ritter, Jr. has charged a man today in connection with a hit and run crash in which a 65-year-old man in a motorized wheelchair was run down while crossing the street.

Jose Calderon (DOB: 2-13-83) is charged with vehicular assault (F4), felony hit and run (F5), DUI and DUI per se (M), failure to return to the scene, failure to report an accident, and careless driving resulting in injury.

The charges allege that, on December 14, 2003 at about 11:30 p.m., Calderon was driving westbound on Alameda Avenue and hit a man in a wheelchair as he was crossing Alameda at Alcott Street.  The force of the crash threw the victim 40 feet from the point of impact.  He was taken to Denver Health Medical Center.  Calderon was arrested nearby at Alameda and Federal after several witnesses followed his car and reported him to police.

Calderon remains in custody in the Denver County Jail.  His bond has been set at $50,000.  He is scheduled to appear in Denver County Court, room 12T, on Friday, December 19, 2003 at 9:00 a.m. to be advised of the charges.
