MAN CHARGED IN CARJACKING

Denver District Attorney Bill Ritter, Jr. has formally charged a man in connection with last weekend’s carjacking at the Cherry Creek Shopping Center.

Michael Caranza (DOB: 11-7-74) is charged with two counts of aggravated robbery (F3) and two counts of attempted second-degree kidnapping (F3 and F4).

On Sunday afternoon December 8, 2003, a 64-year-old woman was getting into her car in the parking structure when she was approached by a man who put a knife to her throat and ordered her to get into her car.  She refused.  The man stole her purse and keys and then fled in her car.  A witness in a nearby car called police.  An investigation by the Denver Police Department led to a suspect, identified as Michael Caranza, who was arrested on December 12, 2003 near his home in Aurora without incident.

Caranza remains in custody in the Denver County Jail.  His bond has been set at $100,000.  He is scheduled to appear in Denver County Court, room 12T, on Thursday, December 18, 2003 at 9:00 a.m. to be advised of the charges.
