CHARGE FILED AGAINST OFFICER

The Denver District Attorney's Office has formally charged Ronald Hughes (DOB: 3-29-48), a Denver police officer, with one count of third degree assault (M1).

Hughes was served with a Criminal Summons and Complaint on Friday, July 20, 2001 alleging that he used unnecessary force during the course of an arrest on June 14, 2001. The suspect who was being placed under arrest, a 17-year-old juvenile, suffered an abrasion on his head allegedly caused by the officer's flashlight.

Hughes is scheduled to appear in Denver County Court on August 30, 2001, at 8:30 a.m. in Division 11S.

The presumptive range for sentencing on a class one misdemeanor is 6 to 18 months in jail and a fine of up to $5,000.
