CHARGES FILED IN CHILD ABUSE CASE
April 17, 2001

Contact: Lynn Kimbrough, 720-913-9025

Denver District Attorney Bill Ritter, Jr. has filed formal charges today against two parents in connection with allegations of child abuse.

34-year-old Joseph Young (DOB: 2-16-67) is charged with one count of child abuse (F3).

31-year-old Sonia Young (DOB: 2-24-70) is charged with one count of child abuse (F3) and one count of menacing (F5).

The charges allege that the victim was beaten with a wood painting stick and stabbed with a kitchen butcher knife between December 2000 and April 2001. The allegations came to light when school authorities called police on April 10, 2001. The victim, a 10-year-old boy, is now being cared for by Denver Human Services.

The next court appearance for Joseph and Sonia Young is scheduled for April 25, 2001 at 9:00 a.m. in Denver County Court room 12T for advisement.
