CASE FILING UPDATE
November 15, 2001

Contact: Lynn Kimbrough, 720-913-9025

Formal charges were filed today in a couple of cases of note:

Solomon Lopez-Martinez (DOB: 4-24-71) (aka: Alejandro Martinez) has been charged with first degree murder (F1) and second degree assault (F4). The charges stem from an incident that occurred on November 8, 2001 in the 2300 block of Curtis/Champa Streets in which a 50-year-old man was beaten with a wooden stick with nails in it. A short time later, a 34-year-old man was also attacked. The first victim died of his injuries at Denver Health Medical Center yesterday (November 14, 2001). The second victim is recovering from his injuries.

Gerald Obi (DOB: 9-3-71) has been charged with second degree kidnapping (F2), and sexual assault with force (F3). The charges stem from an incident that occurred last Saturday, November 10, 2001 in which members of the Guardian Angels heard a woman yelling for help in the 1400 block alley between Pearl and Pennsylvania Streets. They found the 29-year-old victim in a stairwell, and detained a man seen running from the area until police arrived.

*The filing of a criminal charge is merely a formal accusation that an individual(s) committed a crime(s) under Colorado laws. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. See Colo. RPC 3.6
