CHARGES
FILED IN SEPARATE MURDER CASES

- Michael Garrett (DOB: 2-3-70) has
been formally charged today with first degree murder
(F1), attempted first degree murder (F2) and violation
of a restraining order (M2) in connection with the
murder of 29-year-old Chandra Johnson-Richardson and the
attempted murder of her companion. Johnson-Richardson had
just arrived home in the early morning hours of January
20, 2002 and was standing in her garage with a friend when
she was shot multiple times. Garrett was found a short
time later lying in the street at 13th and
Yosemite with a single gunshot wound to the head. He
remains in police custody at Denver Health Medical Center
in critical condition.
- George Barela (DOB: 8-21-82) has
been formally charged today with first degree murder
after deliberation (F1) in connection with the death
of 21-year-old Raymond Hernandez last fall. He has been
wanted since last October when warrants were issued for
his arrest and the arrest of his brother Alex Barela (DOB:
1-18-84) in connection with this case. Hernandez was
walking in the 1100 block of Winona Court when he was hit
by a car on September 19, 2001. Witnesses described the
car as swerving to intentionally hit Hernandez, and
further investigation revealed that he had argued with two
men earlier in the day. George Barela will appear in
Denver County Court, room 12T, on Monday, January 28, 2002
at 8:30 a.m. to be formally advised of the charge against
him. He remains in custody in the Denver County Jail
without bond.
- Raziel Parra (DOB: 3-13-81) has
been formally charged today with two counts of vehicular
homicide (F3 and F4), two counts of vehicular assault (F4
and F5), no proof of insurance and no operator's license
in connection with a fatal DUI accident at Auraria Parkway
and Speer Boulevard on January 19, 2002. Parra was
allegedly driving a '79 Porsche with two female passengers
when he lost control. The car hit a curb, crossed the
median, hit a sign, then rolled and came to rest on its
roof. 21-year-old Nieve Castro was killed and 21-year-old
Susan Fox was seriously injured. Parra remains in custody
in the Denver County Jail. His bond was set at $100,000.
He will appear in Denver County Court, room 12T, on
Monday, January 28, 2002 at 8:30 a.m. to be formally
advised of the charges against him.
