JUVENILE SENTENCED IN TEEN’S DEATH

A 14-year-old teenager has been sentenced to the Division of Youth Corrections for the shooting death of another Denver teenager on July 30th, 2003.   15-year-old Samuel Burks, Jr. died at Denver Health Medical Center the next day.

Eric Coleman (DOB: 7-27-03), who was charged as a juvenile, was sentenced to two years in the Division of Youth Corrections with 6 of months mandatory parole.  His parents took responsibility for $11,450.29 in restitution and the state has reserved its right to restitution for the victim’s headstone and on-going therapy for the victim’s family.

Coleman pleaded guilty in August to reckless manslaughter.  Coleman was showing off a handgun in his front yard when the victim was accidentally shot in the stomach.
