CHARGES FILED IN LODO NIGHTCLUB ASSAULT, ESCAPE

Denver District Attorney Bill Ritter, Jr. filed formal charges today against a man accused of causing a serious injury in a weekend fight at a local club.

Francisco Martinez (DOB: 2-10-75) is charged with first-degree assault (F3) and escape (F4). The charges allege that on July 20, 2003, the victim and he were fighting in a LoDo-area nightclub. Martinez allegedly struck the victim on the neck with a beer bottle, causing a major laceration.

After police responded and the defendant was placed in the back of a patrol car, a large fight broke out in the vicinity of the club. The charges further allege that Martinez escaped from the patrol car during the confusion and that he was found a short time later hiding in a stairwell.

Martinez is being held in the Denver County Jail on $50,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in Denver County Court, room 12T, on Friday, July 25, 2003 at 9 a.m. to be advised of the charges.
