JUVENILE CHARGED AS ADULT FOR ALLEGED HOSTAGE SITUATION

Denver District Attorney Bill Ritter, Jr. filed adult charges today against a 17-year-old male who allegedly created a hostage situation in a juvenile detention facility.

Hector Gurrola (DOB: 2-6-86) has been charged with holding hostages (F2), second-degree assault (F3), assault during escape (F3) and attempted escape (M). The charges allege that on June 18, 2003, Gurrola was being processed at the Gilliam Youth Detention Facility following his arrest for violating probation. The charges further state that he attempted to escape from a holding cell, grabbed a detention facility employee in a chokehold, assaulted her with his fists and a pen, and threatened to kill her if she did not let him leave or if other employees came any closer to him. Other employees eventually subdued him and restrained him until police arrived.

Gurrola has been transferred to the Denver County Jail and is being held on $100,000 bond. He will be formally advised of the charges against him in Denver District Court, Courtroom 13, on July 11, 2003 at 8:30 a.m.
