HERNANDEZ SENTENCED IN VEHICULAR HOMICIDE

17-year-old Ronnie Hernandez was sentenced today in connection with the vehicular homicide death of 19-year-old Qi Zhang, a University of Denver student, that occurred last February.

Hernandez was given a 12-year suspended prison sentence on the condition that he successfully complete a 6-year sentence to the Youthful Offender System.  If he fails to comply with or complete the YOS sentence, he would be sent to the Department of Corrections to serve the 12-year sentence.

Chief Deputy Doug Jackson spoke on behalf of the victim at today's sentencing; no family members of the victim were present.  Several of the defendant's family members spoke on behalf of Hernandez.

Hernandez pleaded guilty in April to vehicular homicide and vehicular eluding resulting in death.  He was driving a stolen car on February 20, 2003 when he crashed into a car driven by Zhang at the intersection of High and Asbury Streets.
