CHARGES FILED IN MULTIPLE MURDER CASE

Denver District Attorney Bill Ritter, Jr. has filed formal charges today against one person and will file formal charges tomorrow against a second person in connection with the murders of four people and the attempted murders of two others on August 7, 2003.

Edward Herrera (DOB: 8-2-52) was charged today with:

-four counts of first-degree murder, after deliberation (F1)

-four counts of first-degree murder, felony murder (F1)

-two counts of attempted first-degree murder (F2)

-two counts of first-degree assault (F3)

-attempted aggravated robbery (F4)

-conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery (F4)

-two sentence-enhancing counts of ‘crime of violence’

Michael A. Sandoval (DOB: 8-23-79) will be charged tomorrow with:

-four counts of first-degree murder, felony murder (F1)

-attempted aggravated robbery (F4)

-conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery (F4)

Herrera and Sandoval remain in custody in the Denver County Jail.  Herrera will appear in Denver County Court, room 12T, to be advised of the charges on Monday, August 18, 2003 at 9:00 a.m.  Sandoval is tentatively set to be advised of the charges on Tuesday, August 19, 2003 at 9:00 a.m.

No decision has been made at this time about whether or not the District Attorney will seek the death penalty in this case.
