71-YEAR-OLD MAN CHARGED WITH SEXUAL ASSAULT ON A CHILD

Denver District Attorney Bill Ritter, Jr. formally charged a 71-year-old man today in connection with a sexual assault on a 7-year-old girl who lived in his neighborhood.

71-year-old Alfred J. Kaufman (DOB: 9-24-31) is charged with one count of sexual assault on a child (F4).

The charge alleges that on April 3, 2003, two sisters, ages 7 and 5, went to visit an elderly man known in their neighborhood as “Cat Man” because he has numerous cats.  The charge alleges that Kaufman invited the girls into his home in the 3800 block of Yates Street and while they were there he sexually assaulted the 7-year-old.

Kaufman remains in custody in the Denver County Jail.  His bond was set at $100,000.  He will appear in Denver County Court, room 12T, on Monday, April 14, 2003 at 9:00 a.m. to be advised of the charge.
