CHARGES FILED IN ATTACK ON DEFENDANT

Denver District Attorney Bill Ritter, Jr. has filed formal charges in connection with an assault on a defendant and on a deputy sheriff last week.  It occurred on March 27, 2002 at the Denver County Jail facility on Smith Road.

Anthony Lane (DOB 10-12-81) is charged with second-degree assault (F4), second-degree assault on a peace officer (F4), and possession of contraband (F4).

The defendant, Gerald Lewis (DOB: 11-11-67), was at the Denver County Jail getting ready to be taken to court for a preliminary hearing when he was assaulted with a homemade knife.  Lewis was taken to Denver Health Medical Center for treatment of his injuries, and has returned to the Denver County Jail.  His preliminary hearing is rescheduled for 8:30 a.m., April 10, 2002, in Denver County Court, room 472W.  A Denver Sheriff’s Deputy was also spit on during the investigation of the incident.

Lane was already facing multiple felony charges including aggravated robbery, kidnapping, and assault on a peace officer.  He remains in custody in the Denver County Jail.
