JURY FINDS MARQUEZ GUILTY

A Denver jury has convicted (Elest) Carlos Marquez of first-degree murder and attempted escape in a week-long trial.

Marquez was charged in connection with the death of Michael Garth, Jr. last New Year's Eve, December 31, 2002. The defense argued at trial that the shooting death of Garth happened in the heat of passion; prosecutors convinced jurors that Marquez had planned the murder, arguing that he hid in the back of his wife's car and ambushed Garth.

Marquez was sentenced immediately to life in prison without parole plus 4 years.

(A mug shot is not available because the defendant is a juvenile.)

*The filing of a criminal charge is merely a formal accusation that an individual(s) committed a crime(s) under Colorado laws.  A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.  See Colo. RPC 3.6
