CHARGES FILED IN APARTMENT FIRE INJURIES

Denver District Attorney Bill Ritter, Jr. filed formal charges today against a woman whose children were injured in an apartment fire after being left home alone.

Lia Howard (DOB: 3-4-81) is charged with three counts of felony child abuse (F4) and one count of misdemeanor child abuse (M3).

On the morning of May 1, 2002 a fire broke out in an apartment at 1438 East 23rd Avenue in Denver.  Three children were rescued from the fire and suffered injuries from smoke inhalation.  A fourth child managed to escape unharmed.  Investigation determined that the children had been left alone at the time the fire broke out.  Their ages are 4, 3, 1½, and 7 months old.

Howard is scheduled to appear in Denver County Court, room 12T, on May 16, 2002 at 9:00 a.m. to be formally advised of the charges.  She remains free on $5,000 bond.

The presumptive range for sentencing on a class 4 felony ranges from probation to 6 years in prison; on a class 3 misdemeanor the range is probation to 6 months in jail.
