Denver District Attorney Bill Ritter announced today that charges have
been filed against three Denver Parks and Recreation workers in connection
with the investigation involving former Deputy Director Charles Robertson.
These employees are charged pursuant to plea agreements reached during the
course of the investigation which are based, in part, on useful
information each provided in the investigation.
Gerald Tennyson (DOB: 11-9-50), is charged with embezzlement of
public property (F5), and first degree official misconduct
(M2). The charges allege that Mr. Tennyson assisted Mr. Robertson in the
embezzlement of public property for the benefit of Robertson’s
restaurants and assisted in covering up thefts of Denver Parks and
Recreation Department property. In an unrelated incident, Mr. Tennyson
also allegedly received and used air conditioning equipment worth several
hundred dollars paid for by Department funds.
Joyce Mendez (DOB: 11-28-52), is charged with first degree official
misconduct (M2). The charge alleges that Ms. Mendez assisted with the
purchase of embezzled property and participated in the cover-up.
Max Maestas (DOB: 11-3-46), is charged with first degree official
misconduct (M2). The charge alleges that Mr. Maestas assisted
Robertson with the purchase of equipment for one of the restaurants and
participated in the cover-up.
All three were direct or indirect subordinates of Robertson. Maestas
was a subordinate of Mr. Tennyson.
The grand jury investigation into activities at Parks and Recreation
continues.
