DENVER MURDER SUSPECT ARRESTED IN MICHIGAN

Denver District Attorney Bill Ritter, Jr. has formally charged a Denver woman with murder today after she was arrested late Sunday night in Michigan.

Demika Lynn Rogers (DOB: 7-6-79) is charged with one count of first-degree murder (F1) in connection with the stabbing death of 20-year-old Golden Barefield.

Barefield was stabbed on July 31, 2003 at about 11 p.m. when she tried to intervene in a fight between several women in the 1900 block of Trenton Street.  The charge alleges that Rogers stabbed Barefield as Barefield came to the defense of a friend who was involved in the altercation.

The Denver Police Department identified Rogers as a suspect in the case and obtained a warrant for her arrest.  She was located in Battle Creek, Michigan where she was taken into custody late last night (Sunday, August 24, 2003).  She will appear in court in Michigan tomorrow for her advisement.  The extradition process can take up to 90 days if a defendant does not waive extradition.
