WOMAN CHARGED IN BABY'S BATHTUB DEATH

December 17, 2001

Contact: Lynn Kimbrough, 720-913-9025

Denver District Attorney Bill Ritter, Jr. has filed formal charges against a woman in connection with the recent death of her 6-month-old daughter. The baby died on November 14, 2001 two weeks after being left unattended in a bathtub with a sibling.

Jamicia Hughes (DOB: 3-5-81) is charged with child abuse resulting in death (F2) and misdemeanor child abuse (M2).

The charges stem from an incident that occurred on Friday, November 2, 2001. A 6-month old baby girl and a one-and-a-half year old boy were left unattended in a bathtub. The 6-month-old later succumbed to her injuries; the other child was uninjured.

Hughes was arrested on December 12, 2001 while appearing in a Denver courtroom on an unrelated matter and remains in custody in the Denver County Jail. Bond was set at $50,000. She is scheduled to appear in Denver County Court room 12T on Wednesday, December 19, 2001 at 9:00 a.m. to be formally advised of the child abuse charges against her.

The presumptive range for sentencing on a class 2 felony is 8 to 24 years in prison.

*The filing of a criminal charge is merely a formal accusation that an individual(s) committed a crime(s) under Colorado laws. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. See Colo. RPC 3.6
