Dextromethorphan

Dextromethorphan (DXM) is an over the counter cough medication that is commonly abused by teenagers. DXM is in the opiate class of drugs, the same class of drugs to which heroin and morphine belong. Although in the same class as heroin, DXM has effects similar to phencyclidine (PCP, angel dust) in overdose. In large doses DXM causes hallucinations that may be violent and cause the user to harm themselves or others. It can also decrease or stop a persons breathing, in large doses. When used with certain prescription medications, including antidepressants and MAO inhibitors, DXM can cause a life threatening reaction called serotonin syndrome, which can be fatal.
