Herbal Ecstasy

The “Real Story” on Herbal Ecstasy

Herbal liquid drinks sometimes referred to as “herbal ecstasy” have received much attention in the local press lately and are now the focus of investigation due to the implication of one particular product in the hospitalization of four teenagers for life-threatening symptoms. These products are available over the Internet and in certain stores sometimes referred to as “head shops.” They are touted to be a “safe and legal alternative to street drugs.” Some popular names include Green Hornet, Orange Butterfly, Liquid Trip2 Night, Benzo Berries and others. Due to the increasing popularity of these products, there is growing research into what these drinks actually contain. The bottom line is that these products are not safe and often contain additional drugs that may not be listed on the label. This is in violation of the Federal Food Drug and Cosmetic act which makes the marketing of these products illegal and a federal offense, although the FDA currently does not regulate the production or sale of herbal products.
