Denver Judge Sentences Former State Senator Sonya Jaquez Lewis

DENVER — Denver District Attorney John Walsh has announced that former Colorado State Senator Sonya Jaquez Lewis has been sentenced to two years of probation and 150 hours of community service.  She was also fined $3000.  If she completes an additional 100 hours of public service, the fine will be waived.

On January 28 of this year, Lewis was convicted at trial of all four felony charges she was facing: one count of Attempt to Influence a Public Servant and three counts of Forgery.

In January of 2025, in the midst of an investigation by the Colorado Senate Committee on Ethics, Lewis forged several letters supposedly written by former aides to refute allegations that Lewis was mistreating her staff.

“This case should send the message that elected officials will be held accountable when they break the law and violate the public’s trust. Sonya Jaquez Lewis will now pay a price for behavior that simply cannot and will not be tolerated in our community,” said DA Walsh.  “I want to thank the prosecutors, investigators, victim advocates and legal administrative assistants in my office, whose outstanding work brought about the successful resolution of this case.”

Chief Deputy District Attorney Robert Nitido led the prosecution team for the Denver DA’s Office.
