JURY ACQUITS FORMER DENVER SHERIFF’S OFFICER OF ALLEGED ASSAULT OF JAIL INMATE

A Denver County Court jury today found a former Denver Sheriff’s officer not guilty in an alleged assault last March of a Denver city jail inmate.

Former Denver Sheriff’s Department Sergeant Randolph Romero was charged last August with third-degree assault (M1).  After a three-day trial, the jury returned a not guilty verdict late this afternoon.

Romero was accused of unlawfully physically taking an inmate down to the ground in March 2017 without evident cause inside an elevator at the Van Cise-Simonet Downtown Detention Center. The inmate was handcuffed and wearing a spit hood at the time.
