Defendant was in jail for alleged Starbucks robbery

Denver District Attorney Beth McCann has formally charged a Denver city jail inmate with the attempted murder of a Denver Sheriff’s deputy.

Cether Watkins (dob: 09-19-1993) is charged with one count of criminal attempt to commit murder in the first degree (F2) and three counts of assault in the second degree (F4).  Charges were filed today.

The charges allege that on October 22, 2018, Watkins attacked a Denver Sheriff’s deputy, hitting him on the head with a large plastic bin and then choking the deputy. Other jail inmates intervened and helped stop the assault.

He is scheduled to appear on October 29, 2018, at 8:30 a.m. in courtroom 2300 for 2nd advisement in this case (18CR08093).

Watkins was in the Denver city jail awaiting further court proceedings in another case described below at the time of the alleged assault.

Watkins was charged on October 17, 2018, with seven counts of aggravated robbery (F3), two counts of attempted aggravated robbery (F4), one count of third degree burglary (F5), and nine counts of crime of violence (sentence enhancers) in connection with an alleged robbery at gunpoint of victims at a Starbucks in the 9900 block of E. Hampden Avenue on October 13, 2018.

He is scheduled to appear on November 6, 2018, at 8:00 a.m. in courtroom 2100 for a preliminary/disposition hearing in this case (18CR07871).
